An informal and short human-readable definition of a concept, in terms of a 'one-liner'. Short description Identifies postal codes that have been retired or replaced in postal code updates.
Informal and comprehensive human-readable definition of a concept. Description This category includes data quality rules that detect postal codes that were once valid but have been retired, replaced, or reorganized by postal authorities. Postal code systems evolve over time as geographic boundaries change, postal routes are reorganized, or administrative reforms occur. Outdated postal codes might still be syntactically correct and might have existed in the past, but they are no longer current in the postal system. Using outdated postal codes can lead to delivery delays, incorrect routing, or failed address validation with current postal databases. These rules help identify addresses that need updating to current postal codes. The validation supports the Representational_consistency dimension by flagging postal codes that don't align with current postal code reference data.

PT (Portugal) This rule searches for the "Old" post code format of Portugal which consists of 4 digits: NNNN.

The Portuguese postal service (C.T.T.) has changed the postal code system in 1999-2000. The old codes (Código Postal) consisted of a block of 4 digits, starting with a number between 1 and 9. In 1999, three extra digits were added to this code. It is likely to find postal codes with 4 or 7 digits for a transition period. In the new codes, the seven digits is formatted: NNNN-NNN. The first four digits will correspond to the old postal code. When the old four-digit code was still in use, large users were indicated by the word CODEX after the name of the town. Now that the seven-digit code is used, the word CODEX should no longer be found in or used for addresses.
